Ambulatory healthcare facilities are changing the way people experience healthcare, away from the busy campuses of hospitals and emergency rooms. The demand for efficient cost-effective design requires rigorous, value-based planning metrics. The past 4 years I have led a subcommittee of the AIA Academy of Architecture for Health Research Initiatives Committee to create a methodology for comparing planning metrics across the ever-changing shifts in ambulatory building typologies.
